Brasserie Dupont, Saison – 3

Stolta traditioner, stramt snygg flaska, mystisk öltyp…

”Saison” is French for season, because these ales were traditionally brewed in the autumn or winter for consumption during the late summer harvest for farm workers who were entitled to up to five litres throughout the workday during harvest season.

Today they are brewed year round. As the saison style originated before the advent of refrigeration, Belgian brewers had to brew in autumn or winter to prevent the ale from spoiling during the storage period. After brewing, the ale was stored until the late summer harvest. Although now most commercial examples range from 5 to 8% abv, originally saisons were meant to be refreshing and thus had alcohol levels less than 3%. Because of the lack of potable water, saisons would give the farm hands the hydration they needed without the threat of illness.

The ale had to be strong to prevent spoilage during the long storage, but at the same time could not be so strong as to incapacitate the workers. Additionally, these beers were strongly hopped, as hops act as a preservative and have antiseptic properties. Saisons brewed in early Spring would often be blended with saisons brewed the previous Autumn, or even blended with lambic beers to increase the refreshing acidity of these beers. Blending also occurred to reduce the abv, and thus increase its refreshment value.”

”The Saison Dupont is a top fermentation beer with refermentation in the bottle.
Since 1844, this beer has been brewed in our farm-brewery, during the winter time. Then this beer became a second refermentation in the barrel.
During the next summer, this very thirst-quenching beer was served to the “saisoniers” which were working on the fields.
Surely therefore, our Saison Dupont is considered as “the classic” among the Belgian season beers!
Coppery blond, the finest aromas and a strong bitterness transform this beer into a thirst-quenchener with no equal, just the way it was created.
Our selection of yeasts is the perfect base for these typical aromas and ditto taste.
A real refermentation in the bottle, which will continue for a long time in your cellar, result into this complex and particular aromatic beer.”

”A: Pale golden color, limpid. Lots of carbonation. Huge white long lasting head.

S: Herbal, spicy. Also funky.

T: The attack on the palate is frank and sharp, at the same time acid and bitter. Then, the taste follows the nose with herbal, fruity but also spicy flavors. The bitterness does not linger very much. Yeasts are clearly dominating. Finishes very dry.

M: High carbonation responsible of the frank attack. Very refreshing.

O: A good shot. Representative of the style. Easy to drink (good carbonation, no excessive bitterness, low alcohol), but not watery and really flavorful. The (slight) funky aspect may surprise while looking for something more fruity however. Overall, a beer to consume on regular basis.”

🙂 Funky… on a regular basis… Nja…
